Mandatory pool fences are designed to prevent accidental drowning. So if you’re installing a pool, it’s worthwhile doing research to ensure you select a quality fence that is compliant with pool fencing regulations. According to Australian requirements, the pool fence must be at least 1200mm in height and the bottom of the pool fence and gate must be no more than 100mm off the ground. Before you start planning your fence installation, you’ll need to decide which type of pool fence is right for you.
There are 4 main types of pool fences to choose from, each with its own pros and cons.
Glass pool fences are made from strong tempered glass and can either be frameless or semi-frameless. For semi-frameless, the glass panels are secured to the stainless steel posts while for frameless installations, the glass panels are installed into spigots that have been secured into the ground.
Pros
Allows the uninterrupted view of the pool area, so you can showcase your pool and monitor swimmers
Toughened glass panels are extremely durable and long-lasting, so they likely won’t require repair or replacement for a long time
Requires minimal maintenance
Versatile and plenty of customisation options (e.g. glass tints, thickness, shape)
Cons
The initial cost of installation is higher than other fencing types. However, this needs to be balanced with the consideration that glass fencing usually lasts longer
Although not prone to damage if you want to keep the panel looking clear, you’ll need to clean the glass regularly
Standard metal pool fences are usually made from aluminium and come in a variety of designs ranging from simple straight poles to detailed mesh designs.
Pros
Generally quite affordable
Mesh designs can offer privacy
Allows for the breeze to pass through
Versatile colour and design options (e.g. standard pole fences to custom mesh designs)
Cons
Requires frequent cleaning as they are prone to collecting dust, debris and cobwebs
Prone to rusting over time
Poor visibility of the pool area
Not as durable as glass and may be prone to bending or breaking
PVC (also known as vinyl) is a type of toughened thermoplastic that is usually white in colour and often used to create a “white picket fence” look. PVC fences have a similar cost to aluminium fences but are less popular due to their distinctive look.
Pros
It doesn’t rust or absorb moisture so maintenance is limited to simply wiping down the fence to keep it clean
Can offer a high degree of privacy, making them a good option if your pool is in a high visibility area (e.g. main road or adjoining a neighbour’s property)
Cons
Colour and design options may be limited
PVC posts may sag over time and require replacement
If your fence is in an area with little shade or air movement, it can become mouldy
Combination pool fences are made by combining multiple types of pool fencing. The most popular type of combination pool fencing is aluminium and glass pool fences. This option allows pool owners to enjoy some of the benefits of a glass pool fence while keeping the overall cost of the installation down. For example, many people choose to have one or two sides of the fence closest to the house constructed using glass and using aluminium fencing on the remaining sides of the pool.
Pros
Allows you to enjoy some of the benefits of more expensive fencing types while keeping overall costs down
Cons
May create an unusual look with the contrast between the fence types
The best fencing material for your pool will depend on your personal preferences, needs, and budget. Glass, metal, PVC or a combination can all form a safe and secure barrier. However, when it comes to durability, visibility, and maintenance, many select glass panels.
