What Are Floating Stairs?

Floating stairs are cleverly designed to give the illusion that the stairs are floating in the air and are completely unsupported. Of course, all stairs need a supporting structure to hold them in place. But for floating stairs, this support is hidden to give an ultra-minimalist look. One key defining feature of floating staircases is that the individual treads are not connected to one another. Instead, each tread is attached to a stair stringer that runs under the staircase or the structural support is placed on or behind the wall. This creates an open space between each stair tread to give the impression they are floating freely in the air.

How Do Floating Stairs Work?

While most traditional staircases have closed risers with two stringers supports that are clearly visible on either side of each tread. Floating staircases usually have just one steel stringer hidden underneath the treads. Each tread is attached directly to the stringer support with open risers, meaning the treads are not connected to one another.

Cantilevered stairs are an ultra-minimalist version of floating stairs where the treads are attached to the supports located in the wall so that they appear to sprout magically from the wall and float in the air with nothing beneath them at all.

While the design of floating stairs may appear to defy gravity, it is actually very structurally sound. Floating stairs require precise engineering to ensure the stringer or wall structures can adequately support the staircase.

Keep in mind that floating stairs must have handrails attached in order to comply with Australian regulations. To maintain a minimalist look most people opt for a frameless glass safety barrier.

Types Of Floating Staircases

The defining features of a floating staircase are its open risers and hidden supports. There are different types of floating staircases shapes and designs available. The 2 main factors that can be varied are:

Stringers and supports

These can be placed in different locations and in some cases, two stringers may be used rather than the typical singular stringer design. Some options include:

One metal stringer running underneath the centre of the staircase

  • Two metal stringers running underneath the staircase

  • One metal stringer attached to the wall to create cantilevered stairs

  • No stringer but instead the cantilevered stairs is attached to the wall using a metal frame or with pockets in the wall.

Shape of the staircase

As with any staircase, floating staircases can come in a number of shapes and directions. Some examples include:

  • U-shaped or L-shaped staircases

  • Spiral or curbed staircases

  • Straight staircases

What Materials Can Be Used For Floating Stairs?

While stringers and structural supports are generally made of metal. The stair treads can consist of any material including steel, timber and glass. As such, the design of the floating staircases can be tailored to complement almost any room and aesthetic. Glass treads generally create the most minimalist look and allow for the free flow of light through the staircase.

Floating Staircase Benefits

They’re beautiful

It probably goes without saying but for most people, the main benefit of a floating staircase is its uniquely elegant and minimalist look. The lack of visible structural supports creates an open and airy look that allows light to flow freely through the space, which can make rooms appear brighter. This is especially true if the stairs have glass handrails and/or glass treads.

They’re space-efficient

Space is a premium in most homes and wasting valuable floor space on a clunky staircase is a surefire way to make your room appear smaller. Due to their clever design, floating stairs can free up the floor space that is directly underneath them. This allows you to use the area for additional storage and seating. In some cases, the cozy nook created by a floating staircase can be the perfect space for a small semi-secluded space.

They’re surprisingly simple to install

Considering how impressive they look, the installation process for a floating staircase is usually quite simple and not overly expensive. A floating staircase may be the most cost-effective option in many cases. The minimalist design will also help you save on maintenance and cleaning in the long run.

The options are endless

If you’re not already sold on the benefits of a floating staircase, keep in mind that there are endless design options available. The design can range from ultra-modern and minimalist to a simple stringer L-shaped staircase with timber treads.

How Much Do Floating Staircase Costs?

Although they look impressive, floating stairs can also be a very economical option. The cost will depend on the design of the staircase and the materials you choose. Ask your staircase contractor for an exact quote on the different options.
