Is the view of your swimming pool clouded by discoloured glass panels? Do the stains remain even after cleaning?

If you’ve answered yes, it’s time to upgrade your cleaning method or glass balustrade. To help you decide on the best option, we’ve compiled a guide on how to clean your glass pool fencing and when to consider a replacement.

Are Glass Pool Fences Hard To Keep Clean?

Glass pool fencing is typically easy to keep clean. If your glass panels are not coming clean or require more maintenance, it could indicate improper cleaning methods or extensive wear. To make an informed decision, you must first consider various cleaning options.

How To Clean Your Glass Pool Fence

Here’s how to can clean your glass balustrade:

Tools

  • Bucket
  • Squeegee or high-quality microfibre cloth
  • Warm water
  • Mild dishwashing detergent
  • Garden hose
  • Non-scratch mop or sponge.

Method

  • Clear the area around the fencing, removing debris and plants stuck in the hardware or growing near the glass.
  • Gently dust the glass with a microfiber cloth and remove loose dirt and cobwebs in the hardware.
  • Lightly hose your fencing to loosen dirt, grime and stains.
  • Mix a small amount of detergent into a clean, warm water bucket.
  • Wet your sponge or debris-free mop, but do not wring it out.
  • Wash your fencing using your sponge or mop, focusing on the panels and spigots.
  • Use your hose to rinse the soap.
  • Wipe excess water on both glass sides with a squeegee or microfibre cloth. (You can skip this step if your glass has a protective coating.)
  • Use your microfibre cloth to wipe and shine the panel edges, spigots and hardware.

Removing Stains From Your Glass Panels

Removing hard-water stains and tough marks can require more specialised cleaning techniques.

Hard-Water Stains

Chlorine and water minerals can leave cloudy stains on glass panels that soap water can’t remove. In this instance, using specialised glass cleaners may be the best solution.

  • Spray your glass cleaner to the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Use a microfiber cloth to scrub the area gently — Do not apply too much pressure to the glass.
  • Use a hose to rinse the solution.
  • Wipe away excess water with a clean glass squeegee or microfibre cloth.

Bird Droppings

Bird droppings can leave unsightly marks on your pool fence. They can also etch into the glass and cause permanent stains if left for too long. To remove droppings, use a white vinegar solution or specialised cleaner.

  • Rinse the affected area with warm water to soften the droppings. Do not scrape them off to avoid scratching your glass.
  • Spray a specialised cleaner or vinegar solution to the area.
  • Use a microfiber cloth to wash the marks.
  • Wipe away excess water with a clean glass squeegee or microfibre cloth.

Mould

Mould can build up on your glass panels in humid and wet weather. It’s best to remove mould when you notice it and before it spreads. A bleach-water solution or commercial mould-resistant treatment may be the best option.

  • Wear protective gloves, a mask and goggles.
  • Mix a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide or Chlorine Bleach into a bucket of warm water.
  • Apply the solution to your glass panels and let it sit for a while.
  • Gently scrub the glass, focusing on affected areas, using a microfiber cloth or sponge.
  • Rinse the solution with a garden hose.
  • Wipe away excess water with a clean glass squeegee or microfibre cloth.

If you use a commercial treatment, follow the product instructions for accurate usage and best results.

Glass Panel Maintenance Tips

Preventative care is the best solution to keeping your glass panels in excellent condition. Here are some maintenance tips to follow:

1.   Inspect Your Glass Frequently

Inspect your glass periodically for damage, such as cracks and scrapes, so you can get them fixed and prevent more extensive damage.

2.   Use Gentle Detergents

When cleaning your glass, choose eco-friendly and non-abrasive detergents to preserve its sheen and quality.

3.   Consider a Protective Coating

Invest in a protective coating — an additional glass layer that reinforces and protects your panels against scratches and other harm.

4.   Remove Dirt Immediately

If you notice bird or animal droppings, clean them immediately to prevent them from setting in and leaving stains.

5.   Use a Quality Glass

Choose high-quality glass options to enhance the look and durability of your pool fencing.
